Depends where you get hit and how often. A shot to the ribs isn’t so bad - a good shot to an unprotected wrist can cause serious damage, a straight thrust to the throat could kill. We all take off-target hits and shrug them off, lots of times not even noticing the bruises until after practice. But trust me, you don’t want to get hit repeatedly with a shinai over a 2 hour practice.
