"Emotional Self Defense
Tune into KarateKast.com and go to show #20. This is by far one of the most interesting and educational programs you will hear. Grandmaster Danny Passmore (President of the Texas Martial Arts Hall of Fame) is educating kids & adults of all ages on emotional self defense. This is a great additive to any martial art program. This program focuses on many topics, like saying “No”, and teenage dating. To sum it up, it educates listeners to respect everyone. Grandmaster Passmore also has a book he has written on this topic and is highly recommended to read. Later Tong Il Lo Martial Science will be hosting an Emotional Self Defense seminar later in 2006 to help out the communities of Dallas / Fort Worth and the surrounding areas."
exactly, how is this self-defense?
I don’t get it. It looks like a typical dojo and by that I mean a bad place to train. The place does not strike me as being really bad, they don’t make any crazy claims, they are just minding their own. Why are you searching these schools? Didn’t you just start taking BJJ? If this is the case, don’t spread yourself thin, concentrate on the ground game and learn from there.
There are usually Judo clubs at the local university for cheap, join one.
thats what i was thinking, they dont look that bad but personaly i wouldnt train with them. Im all for mixing styles but when you make up your own name and try to call it something fancy to attract customers.
Do you have any idea how much mcdojo there is in texas? Just the dallas metroplex alone is incredible… open up a phone book and go to the martial arts section and it will give you a fuckin migraine…
hence the title. was being sarcastic
Stop making threads or you’re going to get my e-foot in your e-ass.
how the fuck was this against the bullshido rules?
all my threads rock ass and you know it
LOLTEEHEE… ahem
yes, all of The MMA kid!'s threads rocked ass.
I think he meant sucked ass…just a mistype on his part.
Gringo Grande
I dunno. I think the MMA kid has caught the correct. This group looks like they could be practicing the half nelson, the full nelson and the father nelson. Or the possibility exists that these folks are simply the village peoples’ roadies.
Well actually, Tong Il Lo is simply a self-defense art that was created initially as a youth anti-kidnapping program and an adult safety-awareness and self-empowerment program that has evolved into much more. It united several arts in an attempt to create a more well-rounded self-defense art. There is a lot more to it, and I have trained in the art personally since its inception in 1994, and am now a 3rd degree black belt. We do not have a gold belt, that is a gentleman from another system. The picture you are looking at is not a photo of all Tong Il Lo practitioners, those are masters from many different arts after a black belt test that was held at our main Tong Il Lo location. The reason it’s referred to as ‘martial science’ is because we teach not only the raw physical techniques, but also how the techniques work and how the body is affected, as well as many other aspects. These include kinesiology, physics, anatomy, as well as many other different sciences. It is very Korean-based in its type of discipline and structure, at least I feel that it would be when viewed from an outside perspective, this being attributed to some of its foundation in Tae Kwon Do. The words ‘Tong Il Lo’ mean “Path to Unity” in Korean, and the whole basis of the art is to unite people of all backgrounds and beliefs under one family. It could basically be broken down as a mixed martial art with a philosophy behind it. It’s not meant to be just another McDojo that are a dime a dozen. If that were the case, then the classes wouldn’t be so affordable. I, myself, have three locations I teach at, as well as an instructor teaching under me with an at-risk youth program in the DFW metroplex. It doesn’t make me rich, but its what I love to do.
I feel the same when it comes to the quality of the martial arts being offered nowadays. I feel that the black belt has lost close to all of it’s respect and prestige because of so many self-proclaimed and self-promoted masters and grandmasters who simply create another watered-down variation of another art and call it something ‘new’ to gain attention. I feel that many instructors that are charging out the rear end for classes are too concerned with the monetary gain rather than the quality of what they’re teaching and who they’re teaching it to. That’s why McDojos are so common. The instructors who are really trying to do something good and give something back are struggling because many people fall prey to guaranteed black belts and promises of being the ultimate fighter.
I don’t mean to come across as defensive, as I understand anyone can look at an art and question its plausibility. I think every art SHOULD be questioned. How else could we filter the quality teachers from the get-rich-quick schemes? I just wish to give you a a more informed view of Tong Il Lo as a whole. If you sincerely wish to find out more about it, you can visit our website at tongillo.com and I’m listed on the Staff page. Feel free to contact me and sit in on or even try out a class, just to see for yourself. I’m open to anyones views and will try to answer any questions as best I can. Take care!
