Martial arts expert fighting for life after being stabbed by burglars

Jul 24 2010 Mark Mcgivern

A MARTIAL arts expert was fighting for his life last night after he and his wife were stabbed in their home by intruders.

Johannes Alder, a five-time British champion in sombo wrestling, confronted two teenage burglars after they attacked his wife Liz, 38.

But, still half asleep, the brave 37-year-old was stabbed in the head and body before the thugs fled.

Medics at first listed him as critical, fearing he would die from his serious wounds. Liz also underwent surgery for a slashed wrist.

Both were in a “serious but stable” condition last night. Blood could be seen on the door of the couple’s home yesterday.

Police branded the attack “appalling”.

Apprehend It is understood Johannes and Liz were asleep in their home in Saucelhill Terrace, Paisley, when the burglars struck. It is believed the teenage thieves were loading valuables from homes into a car parked nearby.

Liz heard noises and went downstairs, catching them in the act. Johannes then tried to apprehend one of the youths before both turned their knives on him.

Neighbour William McGuire said: "We could hear shouting. I heard Liz shouting, ‘Phone the police, phone the police’.

“She sounded frantic, really terrified, and I suspected that there were intruders in the house.”

William, 61, added: “They are lovely neighbours. I know Johannes is into martial arts, but he would never be aggressive. He is a very decent, quiet guy.”

Johannes is an expert in sombo wrestling, a Russian martial art, which merges judo, ju-jitsu, karate and east European wrestling.

He has an IT degree and worked for the police before moving to another job. He was recently made redundant.

Liz runs a business with her sister Angela, selling children’s clothes. The couple married in 2008.

Police said the attack happened in the middle of a spree of thefts in the area.

Superintendent Niven Rennie said: “This is an appalling attack on a couple within their own home. Clearly, our thoughts are with them at this time. I would appeal for anyone who has information to contact us.”

Police said the suspects were between 17 and 19. One was 5ft 10in, with short, blond spiky hair.

The second was of similar build and both wore dark clothing.

Hope they recover soon and culprits are punished soon

how much better would it have been if they weren’t carrying knives?

Headline: Two Youths get Choked to Death… at the same time… after flying through the air.

I know that area a lot of Judo and rugby union guys live round their, it’s a not bad area surrounded by Paisley. If I lived their there would be dogs in the house Paisley has always been a dump full of nutters.

Shocking absolutely shocking. Glasgow has a fearsome reputation for carriage and use of knives - as this illustrates but it’s the sheer criminality that also seems to drive it.

The only lesson to draw is that irrespective of your MA skills, defences against a knife (or, worse, 2) is only ever theoretical in a training environment. Sadly, the best defence of running away seems to have been denied.

Hope he soon recovers and that the scumbags are jailed.

I hope he gets to see them before they get jailed.

I’m still hoping to see arms ripped off and scumbag-shaped holes in the earth from harai goshi.

Could someone help me out and tell me what redundant means in this context?

This is pretty bad, but he obviously did enough to keep his wife and himself from being killed. Hopefully they will fully recover and the theives will get found. It didn’t mention in the story if they escaped with their stolen goods either.

It means he lost his job.

Thanks, although that makes the story even worse, if possible

… says the guy is a Taekwondo expert. Which is it???

Does it really matter ?

Let’s hope he and his wife make a full recovery

Looks like both as I found this link detailing one of his Sombo fights.

No, I’m not going to look for proof of TKD.

yeah, I think the “taekwondo” paper got it wrong.

[B]Two teenagers charged with attempted murder of martial arts expert

Two young men accused of breaking into Johannes Alder’s home in Paisley and attacking him and his wife during an alleged break-in.

Ian Michie, 17, and Daryl Dock, 18, were at the High Court in Glasgow on Monday for a preliminary hearing. The pair are accused of the attempted murder of Johannes Alder - a five time champion in Sombo wrestling - at his home in Saucelhill Terrace in Paisley on July 23 this year.

They are also alleged to have assaulted Mr Alder’s wife Elizabeth to her permanent impairment during the same incident. Michie and Dock are charged with breaking into the property and stealing a numbers of items including knives, rings, a wallet, an iPod and a purse.

They are then said to have acted in an “intimidating manner” towards Mr Alder and pushed him to the ground. It is claimed Mr Alder was then repeatedly struck on the head and body with knives or similar instruments.

Mrs Alder is said to have been assaulted by being struck on the arm. Michie and Dock also face an allegation of attempting to defeat the ends of justice. It is claimed they tried to dispose of weapons used in the attacks down a drain.

The pair finally face two other charges related to the same day. Michie and Dock are accused of stealing a mobile phone in George Street, Paisley. They are also alleged to have forced open a car in Ardgowan Street, also Paisley, and took a Sat-Nav and compact discs.

Lawyers for both accused entered not guilty pleas to all charges on Monday. Judge Lord Kinclaven adjourned the case until a further preliminary hearing next month.

Well looks like the perps are moving through the UK justice system now. I think we can assume Mr. Alder did make a recovery and pulled through
