Australia’s boxer politician laughs off punch

CANBERRA (Reuters) - Australia’s super-fit Health Minster Tony Abbott, who was a champion university boxer, on Thursday laughed off being punched by a mental patient while visiting a hospital.

Abbott, 48, was punched in the face and kicked in the thigh when a patient lunged at him while he was touring a hospital for the criminally insane in southern city of Melbourne on Wednesday.

“Some people probably thought he had a sane moment, and that’s why he swung the punch at me,” Abbott, who was a champion boxer while a student at Oxford University, told Australian radio.

“Just at the moment when I was trying to figure out whether it was appropriate for health ministers to defend themselves, the staff had him well and truly bundled up and they were talking to him and calming him down.”

Shame on him for not ducking it!

ahhh tony abbott, i remember a joke a few elections back that Australia just might end up being run by (Tony) Abbot and (Peter) Costello.

We’ve definately got more punch worthy polititions though, like our prime minister!

your prime minister is what Bush wants to be when he grows up

You can’t punch guys with glasses!

He’s probably short enough to kick in the head though.

Just try not to get your feet stuck in his eyebrows.

read my signature… haha… billy connoly… what a legend.

p.s: howards a c***

hehe that was on enough rope wasn’t it? Connolly rules.

I always figured Howard looked a bit like a cane toad, which explains why the government does nothing about them.

Well, “Health minister attacked by loon” sure reads better in the papers than “Health minister administers beatdown to hapless mental patient.”

Well, I don’t know. Self defense by the minister could be politically bad but it also has the possibility of boosting his popularity by creating a cult of personality.
