Another Popular Karate Instructor Arrested

Popular Karate Instructor Arrested

By: Melissa Maeyer

A man many people know as a popular martial arts instructor in amarillo was arrested on Friday

A little after 4 that afternoon, 62 year old Nelson Dewey Harvey was arrested on two counts of indecency with a child.

Nelson Dewey Harvey is the owner and operator of the Harvey’s Karate Tae Kwon Do Center in Amarillo.

The allegations are from two separate accounts, from two different victims, that occurred during Harvey’s after school program.

The first complaint claims that on November 4th of 2005, Harvey touched the breast of an 11 year old victim 3 different times in one day.

The second alleged act occurred under similar circumstances in October of 2005, and involves a 9 year old female, whose sibling witnessed some of the offense.

It claims he intended to arouse and gratify sexual desire from the defendant, plus attempt to engage in sexual contact.

Corporal Jerry Neufeld with the Amarillo Police said, “when you have an out cry like this and you get one victim or, in this case, you get 2 victims–now there is the possibility we many have others for whatever reasons who held back or didn’t feel comfortable or felt threatened, who are now willing to come forward and say this happened and this happened there. And you might not have any.”

Neufeld suggests you talk to your children if they attended Harvey’s Karate.

He also says parents should make it a habit to talk to their kids about the after school activities they’re involved in to make sure no one is harming them.

If Harvey is convicted, he could face time in prison or he could get probation.

Right now he is being held at the Potter County Jail on two 25 thousand dollar bonds.

I hope they stick a broom stick up his ass in prison. Or whatever sick shit they like to do. This sicko deserves whatever they are going to do to them in there.

Another martial arts instructor arrested? Surely, not.

I hope they’re telling the truth. To touch a breast three times in a day - or I would assume, a class - isn’t all that unusual if they were groundfighting or grappling.

Which I suppose you shouldn’t be doing with small children, though.

Second one sounds a bit dodgy.

I agree.

On one hand, the instructor could be a perverted creep that needs to be kept away from small children.

On the other hand, he could have been sparring with no head contact (multiple chest punches are common in TKD) or they could have been working grabbing defenses. If such is the case, imagine the trouble a wrestling coach or judo coach could get into if they wanted to teach kids!

I hope they get to the bottom of it.

It sounds like he actually did touch them inapropiately. I can believe the second incident there are possible reasons for them not being the one to actually tell someone.

 1. They are embarrased like it’s somehow their fault.
 2. They think there are no adults in the world who do things like that and if they tell on them no one will believe them.
 3. The child somehow thinks it’s okay for adults to touch them in that way.
 4. I don’t know how to explain it but they could imagine the incident as something else.

Theres proabably something that I’m forgetting to add.

why is there so many of these bastards in the martial arts?

is it because that parents like to ship their kids off unattended, just to get rid of their kid for an hour or so?

i mean at most martial art schools (i’ve never been to the daycare kind) there’s ussually an assistant instructor or 2, right? i mean i find it highy unlikely is witnessing these things… or am i just talking out of my pooh hole agian?

Nonsense. I’ve had adult females students in judo class, I don’t touch a breast three times in one year. Even with guys, hand to chest contact isn’t part of the game. Chest to chest, forearm across the chest, yes, but nothing that should be confused with a breast grab.

I grapple small children on a regualr basis, still manage to keep to an appropriate type of contact - arms and legs mostly.

Because paedophiles home in on jobs with children. I had a post like this on another forum. Why are martial arts teachers more likely to be perverts? And it’s not. No more than teachers, policeman or boy scout leaders. The paedos pick the jobs, leading to hgher numbers of them in those jobs.

I think there is some much potential for abuse, because it is entirely unregulated. Any asshole can get a bunch of gear and open up a storefront and make up some credentials, or simply create their own styles. It’s a great place for you daytime mailroom employee to suddenly be in a position of authority in the evening, when he dons his GI and black belt. At leaset teachers and police officers have to go through background checks in larger districts. Who is checking on your typical Dojo owner? But I digress.

NOT GUILTY!

After all the fuss, this unfortunate man has been slandered to the

quick, had terrible acts wished upon him, and lost his livlihood.

Oh, by the way, he didn’t do it.

Allegations like these could be made against anyone.

All it takes is the wrong kid in the class.

Careless acusations can ruin lives.

Thanks for the update.

That really sucks for him, I hope he can find his way somewhere less… malicious.

Thanks for the updates, articles are being quoted for posterity.

Karate teacher to return to court for round two of legal battle

One trial has ended in his favor but another awaits. Potter County prosecutors will bring a local karate teacher back to the courthouse for round two of a legal fight over indecency with a child.

Nelson Harvey’s not guilty verdict disappointed Potter County prosecutors today, who expected a different outcome. “You get worried about the things you can control and you can’t worry about the things you can’t. And I can’t control the jury verdict,” says Potter County District Attorney Randall Sims.

But sims will have another shot at Harvey, who faces a separate charge of indecency with another child. Harvey’s defense lawyer says he expects the second trial to go the same way as the first. But even if it does, harvey has already lost his karate business, and the defense says his career is ruined.

“Where do you go to get your good name back? That’s the question and you can’t do it,” laments Harvey’s lawyer Paul Herrmann. “When accusations like this are made, no matter what the outcome of the trial is, the person suffers for the rest of their life, the accused.”

Sims tells us cases like this where a child is the primary witness are hard to prosecute, and he expects the second case to be just as tough. The defense says Harvey ran a karate after school program for dozens of kids.

He did not have a child care license but his lawyer says he didn’t need one. The program closed down last year.

This part I believe absolutely.

But on topic, why is it that its almost all TKD guys in these allegations?

I’ll be interested to see the results from the second trial.
