Karate instructor accused of rape

A karate instructor raped a schoolgirl and threatened to hit her if she told anyone, a court was told.

Paul Rudwick, 42, made the threats to the 13-year-old if she refused his demands.

Rudwick, who taught at schools and church halls across Worthing and Littlehampton, also forced the girl to give him oral sex in front of other children, it was alleged.

Rudwick, of Seaton Park, Wick, Littlehampton, denies one count of rape, one of indecent assault, four counts of sexual activity with a child, one count of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, three counts of actual bodily harm and two counts of intimidating a witness between March 2004 and April 2006.

He first met the teenager after her father took her to karate lessons in Worthing, Chichester Crown Court was told.

Black-belt Rudwick allegedly picked the girl up and made her perform sex acts before dropping her off at school.

The girl told the court that Rudwick made her have sex with him five or six times a week.

The court heard that Rudwick would take the girl to Goring Gap in Worthing after picking her up from either Worthing or Lancing train stations.

The girl, now 16, said: "He made me bend over and then had sex with me.

“He told me if I told anyone he would hit me or he would kill himself because his life would not be worth living anymore without me.”

The court heard that Rudwick, who has starred in a number of martial arts videos aimed at children, first raped the girl at his three-bedroom terraced house in March 2004.

She said: "He started to put his hands down my trousers and touched me. I pulled my trousers up but he told me we must have sex.

"He was saying I was being manipulative not having sex with him and was saying he had not had sex for a long time.

“He said I had to reward him for all the things he had given me and told me not to tell anyone after we had sex.”

Rudwick was arrested by Sussex Police in May 2006 on suspicion of hitting the girl.

Rudwick taught at schools including Davison High School in Worthing and Windlesham House School near Ashington.

He also held classes at Angmering Village Hall and Goring Methodist Church in Worthing.

The trial, which will last up to three weeks, continues.

Karate rapist could have attacked other girls
By Miles Godfrey

A pervert karate instructor who raped his 13-year-old student could have abused other victims.

Police have not ruled out the possibility that Paul Rudwick, 43, preyed on other young girls.

The blackbelt, who has made a number of martial arts films aimed at children, was jailed for 14 years last week after being convicted of raping and abusing a 13-year-old girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons.

Detectives have not received firm evidence to suggest Rudwick, from Seaton Park, Littlehampton, carried out other sex attacks.

But they believe there could be a string of other children who may have been abused by the pervert but have stayed silent.

Now they are urging anyone who may have been a victim of Rudwick to come forward, even if they have been scared to in the past.

Detective Constable Tim Hughes, of Sussex Police, said: "At the time of the initial investigation we spoke to a lot of other people who had contact with him and none of them made any disclosures to us.

"But that is not to say he did not attack others. It may be they were reluctant to come forward and may now feel they can because he is behind bars.

“We would certainly investigate any allegations which are made.”

Rudwick, who has made videos with titles such as “Karate For Kids”, worked at a number of schools and clubs in the Worthing area, teaching martial arts.

He befriended the 13-year-old and her family before brutally raping her.

He went on to have sex with her on numerous occasions during a two year reign of terror between 2004 and 2006, often after picking her up from school.

Chichester Crown Court was also told how Rudwick would punch and slap the girl.

On one occasion he made her perform a sex act on him while other children watched.

He was caught after DNA belonging to both him and the girl was found on condoms in a bin at his home.

Rudwick denied 12 charges of rape, indecent assault, having sex with a child, causing actual bodily harm and intimidating a witness.

However a jury took less than three hours to convict him on all counts.

It is known that the martial arts expert had contact with numerous other children both through his classes and through parties he held at his home.

DC Hughes urged anyone who believes they may have fallen prey to Rudwick to contact Sussex Police on 0845 6070999.

He said: "We would absolutely listen to anything other potential victims may have to say.

"I have received a telephone call since the case ended from someone who said they had contact with him.

“It may well be that people feel much safer about coming forward now, or much safer talking about things, now he has been convicted.”

Karate teacher jailed for raping 13-year-old

7:20pm Friday 30th November 2007

By Miles Godfrey

A karate instructor is today beginning a 14-year jail term after carrying out a string of vile sex attacks on a 13-year-old pupil.

Paul Rudwick, who has starred in a string of karate videos aimed at children, befriended his victim and her family before destroying their trust during the two year ordeal.

The 43-year-old blackbelt, from Seaton Park, Littlehampton, first began preying on the girl, now 16, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, after she attended his martial arts lessons.

Then during a reign of terror between 2004 and 2006 Rudwick forced her to have sex with him and even made her perform a sex act while other children watched.

Today at Chichester Crown Court Rudwick sat impassively as the jury took less than three hours to return unanimous guilty verdicts on 12 counts of rape, indecent assault, having sex with a child, actual bodily harm and intimidating a witness.

Shouts of “thank you” and “you’ll get what you deserve in jail” were heard from the public gallery where the girl and her family sat.

Dressed in a black suit and tie with slicked back hair, Rudwick sat impassively as the string of verdicts were read out.

Speaking afterwards, the girl’s parents said: “It has been a horrendous ordeal, we can’t thank the police enough for the work they have done to catch this vile man.”

Crucial to securing the conviction of the rapist was DNA found on numerous condoms inside Rudwick’s home, police said.

Material belonging to the victim was found on the outside of the contraceptives while semen belonging to Rudwick was found on the inside.

During the three week trial, the girl told the court that Rudwick made her have sex with him five or six times a week, often after picking her up from school.

She explained how Rudwick would take the girl to Goring Gap in Worthing: "He made me bend over and then had sex with me.

"He told me if I told anyone he would hit me or he would kill himself because his life would not be worth living any more without me.

"He started to put his hands down my trousers and touched me. I pulled my trousers up but he told me we must have sex.

"He was saying I was being manipulative not having sex with him and was saying he had not had sex for a long time.

“He said I had to reward him for all the things he had given me and told me not to tell anyone after we had sex.”

Rudwick also punched and slapped his victim repeatedly on occasions and told one witness in the case that he would beat him up unless he dropped his testimony.

The instructor has taught at schools including Davison High School in Worthing and Windlesham House School, near Ashington.

He also held classes at Angmering Village Hall and Goring Methodist Church in Worthing.

Before sentencing him, Judge William Wood QC said: “She was entitled to trust you but you betrayed that trust.”

Speaking after the case Detective Constable Tim Hughes, of Sussex Police, praised the girl and her family for their courage.

He said: “They have stayed immensely strong throughout.”
