Having read the main forums for I while now I have come to the conclusion that every martial art apart from Muay Thai (my own MA) and BJJ is crap. Or is it ?
I also study Wing Chun, I train MT 4 sessions a week and WC 1, I quite like the style but am aware of its limitations, it isnt a hard physical workout session but and it is to me a very important but, i am training with a good knowledgable instructor and a great set of lads, and I have an interest in the history and traditions, therefore it is a good night out. Iaido,Aikido and even traditional Karate have little, if any self defence value but are traditional martial arts withstrong values and traditions. People train in different Martial Arts for different reasons, a martial art isn
t crap because some of its techniques are out dated or not applicable in self defence or inside an octagon /ring.
What annoys me are Dojo`s who lie and misslead students into thinking they will become killing machines, and someone who goes around claiming there style is the ultimate.
Basicaly what I am saying is that people train in the martial arts for many reasons,BJJ, Muay Thai or Iaido are all equally valid Martial arts, if that Martial art is chosen and studied for the right reason.
I, and I think most here, agree with you. Fundamentally, there’s nothing wrong with studying something with little to no practical applications (either due to style or training methods). What is valued here is a realistic evaluation of personal ability, and more importantly, what the basis of that evaluation is. This is the key to the high premium places on BJJ, MT, etc. because the training in those styles provides the best method of feedback, fully resistant opponents.
I love wushu, but as a fighting style, it isn’t. Great conditioning, a blast, but the empty-step stance has no place in a fight. But until I claim it does, folks here just don’t care. And that brings us to the real problem we here have with false claims as to the qualifications and combat experience of instructors, because most students don’t take a martial art with the understanding as to it’s position relative to other styles, unless they have a very up-front instructor (which as we all know is a rarity).
Alright, so I’ve just agreed with you, and said stuff everyone here has seen before, go me! But I do have a question. Some have made the comment that the Martial in MA dictates that fighting should be the only aim of the various styles we all study. While I disagree, I’m curious what others think. Is Wushu an MA? How about boxing? Super-compliant partner training arts?
I personally make the distinction between Martial Arts and Fighting Arts, which is purely a semantic distinction. To me a Martial Art has movements fundamentally based in combat, but with some level of abstraction (typically denoted by forms, one-steps, etc.); whereas Fighting Arts would be your boxing, MT, BJJ, etc. This is a jab, practice on the bag, practice on his face, repeat.
Naturally these are just generalizations, and there are exceptions to every rule, this is just how I tend to look at things.
Many MAs have both elements and it may be more about how something is trained.
Take wushu and kung fu they were originally the same (both names for all the CMA). However, wushu is about the presentation of the art and kung fu is about the fighting application.

lol I am like the only n00b in history that didn’t post something like this! That makes me feel good
LOL… the gloating ego of the noob in denial.
Muay Thai and BJJ suck too. All martial arts suck, if you suck. Any martial art can produce a capable fighter. Saying Aikido and traditional Karate have little self defense value shows that you’ve probably never fought anyone who practices those arts. I can’t defend Iaido, because that is swordplay (but people know that going into it.)
Yes, we know. Read how these threads degenerated.

Don’t do it again.
“Iaido,Aikido and even traditional Karate have little, if any self defence value but are traditional martial arts withstrong values and traditions”
Could you please detail the values that I get from punching and kicking?
Hey fuckhead, try reading the stickies next time and cruise a bit more.
Iaido,Aikido and even traditional Karate have little, if any self defence
So learning how to draw a sword, hit someone, clean the blood off and put the sword away in one pretty motion isn’t any good for self defense?
Yeah that perplexed me too. I’m like thinking ‘now you’re going to tell me a sniper rifle is not good for self-defense so I should stop taking up marksmanship’
Can we remove self defense from the vernacular in relation to martial arts?
Omega, you misspelled “Philippines” in your profile, rather annoying to see everyday…
Hey Omega, Suck my Jock, you failed abortion.
You have no balls yet you wear a jock? That falls under why bother? The only reason the abortion failed kid is because I fucked up the doctor who tried it.
I’m going to tell you the same thing I told my mom. The Phillippines are fucked up. I’m Filipino not Fillippino. Where the fuck is the ‘PH’ and the other ‘P’?
Typical Scot, too fucking stupid to even get the name right of one of the countries he lives in.

Jeez.
Chris should have his own sub-forum with SevSb and Fastandfurious.
Not if you happen to live in the year 2006.
