One of the victims was Genki Sudo, 25, a fighter active in the mixed martial arts sport K-1. The Metropolitan Police Department on Friday released an image of the assailant captured by a security camera at a convenience store where one of the attacks took place.

The attacker, who was wearing a helmet and dark sunglasses, assaulted his victims over a 10-minute period in a crowded area near JR Shibuya Station at around 10:40 p.m. The five men were stabbed at different locations. The assailant was described as about 20 years old and approximately 180 cm tall. They said he was wearing a blue shirt and black pants, a black helmet, dark sunglasses, and his arm is tattooed. The assailant apparently used a utility knife to stab his victims, and at times seemed to be mumbling incomprehensibly, police said.

He first chased after a 20-year-old man and a woman on a motorcycle for more than 500 meters, then stabbed the man in the stomach, saying, “Stop necking.” The attacker then rode after another man on a motorcycle, stabbing the 20-year-old victim in the legs, about 100 meters west of where he stabbed the first victim, police said. His third victim was an 18-year-old youth, whom the attacker slashed in the chest after getting off his scooter in front of the convenience store, police said.

The victim had been jogging, and the assailant chased him into the convenience store before attacking him. This attack was captured by the store’s security camera. The assailant then got back on his scooter and minutes later K-1 athlete Sudo and a 41-year-old man, riding together on a motorcycle, became his fourth and fifth victims, police said. He stabbed the two in the back and chest before fleeing on his scooter in the direction of Daikanyama Station on the Tokyu Toyoko Line. Police said earlier that one of the five victims was seriously wounded, but in a later update said all five turned out to have only sustained light injuries.

Biker goes on slashing rampage in Shibuya

Compiled from Mainichi and wire reports, Japan

July 25, 2003

Five men, including a professional K-1 fighter, have been injured in a 15-minute slashing rampage by a biker in Tokyo’s busy Shibuya-ku late Thursday night, police said Friday. The attacker has been captured on a convenience store security camera.

The Metropolitan Police Department is hunting for the culprit, whose images were captured by a security camera at a convenience store where he viciously stabbed one of his victims. The victims, Tsuyoshi Tonouchi, 20, a self-employed man from Setagaya-ku, Daichi Azuma, 20, a university student from Meguro-ku, Masahide Oiwa, 18, a cook from Setagaya-ku, Atsuhiko Ochiai, 41, a company employee from Shinagawa-ku, and professional fighter Genki Sudo, 25, from Koto-ku, suffered minor wounds in the attacks.

Investigators believe the moustached assailant, who was about 20 to 25 years old and 170 centimeters in height, randomly picked his victims. They are also probing if a message posted on Japan’s biggest online chat board, Ni Channel, on late Wednesday night was related to the incident. The message read: “I’ll do a round of random drive-by attacks in Shibuya tomorrow.”

The carnage started at about 10:40 p.m. in the ward. Tonouchi was driving a motorcycle with his girlfriend on the backseat when he realized that a man riding a Honda Dio scooter was staring at him at an intersection in the Sarugaku district. The rider barked at Tonouchi, “Stop necking in front of me!” The 20-year-old moved on but the biker pursued him for about 500 meters while honking his horn before slashing him in the side of his stomach and driving away. Police said the second victim, Azuma, was returning to a sushi restaurant where he worked after a delivery round on a motor bike. Eyewitnesses said Azuma bumped into the assailant who shouted, “Stop!” at him in the Uguisudani district about 100 meters west of the location of the first attack. Azuma tried to avoid the man but he slipped and crashed into a utility pole. The attacker fled on the scooter after slashing Azuma’s right leg.

Soon after that, Oiwa realized a biker was following him as he was walking home after a workout at a boxing gym. The teenager dashed into a nearby convenience store in the Sakuragaoka district to seek refuge. However, the attacker, who wore a black crash helmet, sunglasses, blue shirt and trousers, followed in and stabbed Oiwa in the chest. Ochiai and Sudo, who were both riding their motorbikes, were attacked one after the other by the same man at a location a few hundred meters east from the convenience store. “A passing motorcyclist slashed me,” Ochiai reportedly told arriving officers. Sudo received treatment for a minor stab wound. The 25-year-old is an expert in the Japanese traditional martial art of jujutsu and wrestling and recently participated in the popular K-1 fight circus. He also starred in movie “Kyoki no Sakura,” a violent story of three young nationalists in Shibuya which was released last year.

Police said the assailant, whose arms were tattooed, also slashed a tire of at least one vehicle parked in the area. He bent the license plate of his scooter to make it harder for people to read it.

Sudo’s brilliant, glad he’s alright.

The guy on the bike is a prick.

Now imagine your pain is a white ball of healing light, that’s right, your pain, the pain itself is a white ball of healing light… I don’t think so!

He isn’t pointing to where he got stabbed, he is just demonstrating one of his latest fighting poses he is going to use next.
